Chiarugi is a family-owned company from Tuscany with a long tradition of artisan excellence. Founded in 1969 by master craftsman Remo Chiarugi and passed down to his son Emiliano, the brand continues to create handmade leather bags following ancient Florentine traditions.

Despite today’s rapidly evolving technology, Chiarugi has preserved the charm of authenticity: every creation is born in a Tuscan workshop where art, passion, and Italian design come together, inspired by the timeless heritage of Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo.

Our Leather: Premium, Natural & Vegetable-Tanned

For the production of Chiarugi bags, we use only full-grain natural leather, vegetable-tanned using an ancient method dating back over 2,000 years.

Unlike many modern manufacturers who use coated split leathers covered with synthetic polyester layers, our natural leather follows a unique preparation process. The vegetable tanning technique uses tannins — natural pigments extracted from the bark of oak, birch, chestnut, and other trees — resulting in leather that is:

∘ Soft and flexible
∘ Eco-friendly and sustainable
∘ With warm, natural shades unique to each piece

Traditionally, vegetable tanning required one to three months of immersion in vats filled with water and tree bark extracts. Over time, this process produced thicker, tougher leather, perfect for making belts, bags, and shoe soles.

Today, thanks to innovative techniques, we use faster tanning methods lasting 36 to 48 hours inside rotating barrels, resulting in softer, more flexible leather without losing authenticity.

Since vegetable tanning uses natural dyes extracted from plants and flowers, each bag has a warm, organic color. Slight variations in tone, minor irregularities, and natural wrinkles are not defects — they are the hallmark of authentic full-grain vegetable-tanned leather. This creates the distinctive vintage style that makes Chiarugi bags truly unique and Made in Italy.
