There is nothing new except what has been forgotten. Contemporary fashion designers always look for inspiration in masterpieces of fashion geniuses of the past.
Coco Chanel, Christian Dior, Mary Quant, Salvatore Ferragamo, Roger Vivier are those creators who have really revolutionized the fashion world and influenced the entire era’s style.

Miniskirts, a small black dress, a stiletto heel, bold colors and patterns, short shorts, trouser suits, colorful tights, bright makeup emphasizing the eyes – all these things made conservative matrons boil over. However, the 1960s is the sexual revolution time, which was impossible to stop. Women felt free and liberated, with restrictions gradually fading away at that time.

Style icons

However, it was not only fashion designers who influenced the 1960s’ fashion. Movie and music stars, as well as first ladies were trendsetters. One of the most famous stars who created a romantic look loved by all fashionmongers was Audrey Hepburn. This actress starred as Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany’s movie. Everyone likes how she looks in a long black dress with open shoulders, her gloves, high hairstyle, and jewelry made of pearls and diamonds.

Jacqueline Kennedy also was an elegance icon. Women admired her fitted suits that highlighted her feminine figure, complemented by pillbox hats and sunglasses.
In the 1960s, many girls dreamed of looking like Brigitte Bardot, Marilyn Monroe or Catherine Deneuve, who was the muse of a famous French couturier Yves Saint Laurent.

John Lennon’s life partner and beloved Yoko’s look was a revolutionary one as well. She demonstrated authentic looks consisting of white or black colors only: mini dresses, high boots, and brim hats.
Let’s open the granny’s chest and have a look: what fashion accessories from the 1960s can become a safe complement to the modern look.

Shoes
Ballet shoes, pointed pumps with stiletto heels, open back shoes, strapped shoes called Mary Jane, knee-high laced or zipped boots; lacquered or metallic – all of them are extremely popular today.

Bags.
Since the 1960s, classic rectangular or trapezoidal bags of hard leather with a flap have been remaining fashionable. Such bags are usually carried in hand because of their short handles. Bags are decorated with geometric patterns or embossed to look like reptile leather. These bags are a perfect fit for a businesswoman look.

Puffy tote bags with a zipper are still in the trend today. They can be either sole-colored or decorated with amusing patterns. Such bag models are suitable for a casual look.
Small baguette bags that can be carried both on a shoulder and on an elbow will complement a romantic look.

Those who love reticule bags with a clasp, which came to us from the 1920s and were popular in the 1960s, can feel free to take them out of their grannies’ chests and use them as an accessory for a retro look. Such bags have been in trend for a few recent years.

For a social outing, you can take a clutch bag. If you’ve decided on a vintage accessory, it should be an envelope bag. This model originates from the 1960s as well and is still trendy today.
And of course, a small, quilted shoulder bag by Chanel never goes out of fashion. Nowadays, all fashion houses offer such bag models.

At that time bags used to match with shoes in color and pattern. This emphasized a fashionmonger’s refined taste and elegance.

Glasses and jewelry.

In the 1960s, bright multicolored plastic jewelry was becoming fashionable – sunglasses with thick frames and sometimes a geometric pattern. Or large earrings, rings, or bracelets. A look shouldn’t be overloaded with imitation jewelry. There should be minimum of jewelry. Large jewelry that stands out in size, color or shape are used to complement monochrome garments.

To be continued...
