Chiarugi is a Tuscan family business with a long history. It was founded in 1969 by the craftsman Remo Chiarugi and handed down to his son Emiliano. Despite the rapid technological evolution of the modern world, Chiarugi maintains the production of bags according to ancient Florentine traditions. This is a charm and originality of a small Tuscan workshop that adds to bags a touch of real Italy. The Italy of art by Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo.
Chiarugi uses "living" vegetable-tanned leather for the production of the bags.
The leather that many modern bag makers use is not actually an original "living" leather. It has a leather base with an cuted upper layer, and covered with a layer, often synthetic, based on polyester or other technological materials.
The raw leather of Chiarugi bags, on the other hand, has another preparation procedure. This technology has very ancient origins, dating back to 2000 years ago, and developed during the Middle Ages. Fine and good quality skin is chosen, which is then vegetable tanned. The tanning process takes place in water which contains tannins - natural dyes found in the bark of various plants (oaks, birches, chestnuts, ...).
In the past, vegetable tanning was very slow - the skin was kept in tanks with a solution of water and tree bark for one to three months. After a long time spent in the water, the skin became hard - it was a leather, which was used for the production of belts, bags, soles for shoes. Today, rapid tanning is mainly used which lasts between 36 and 48 hours, in barrels, and which, thanks to the rotation and flapping movement, allows to obtain a softer and more flexible leather.
Vegetable tanning which involves the use of natural dyes, derived from plants or flowers, gives the leather a warm and natural colour, but the surface is not dyed in the same tone. Live skin has irregularities and roughness, and therefore may have areas of color that are darker in some places, and lighter in others. This is not a defect, but the characteristic of a genuine vegetable tanned leather, which gives the leather a true Made in Italy vintage style charm.
Chiarugi produces the bags in different styles - modern and classic.
