A good suit (or dress) can be easily ruined on the road: creases, dust, scuffs from a suitcase’s metal hardware — and the look just isn’t the same anymore. That’s why garment bags were created for business trips, ceremonies, and travel “straight to a meeting”: a travel cover that supports and protects your clothes, helping you arrive with fewer wrinkles and far less stress.

A brief history of garment covers

The idea of protecting clothing with a cover appeared long before modern suitcases. In ateliers and wardrobes, valuable garments were draped with fabric covers, and travelers gradually moved to special “wardrobe cases” made for clothing. The word “portmanteau” (from French porter, “to carry,” and manteau, “cloak”) was used as early as the 16th century to describe a travel bag for garments. Over time, the design evolved: rigid cases and foldable models appeared, allowing clothing to be hung or neatly folded.

That’s how the modern garment-bag logic took shape: minimal contact between fabric and the outside world, and maximum control over creasing.

What a garment bag is — and why it’s useful

A garment bag is a flat (or slightly structured) cover-bag designed to hold a suit, shirts, a dress, and accessories. Unlike a regular suitcase, it’s built specifically for clothing: space for a hanger, securing straps, and pockets for shirts and small items.

When you really need one

• business trips and meetings, when you need to look impeccable;

• weddings, ceremonies, and events with a dress code;

• travel “from the plane straight to the event,” when there’s no time to steam garments;

• transporting items you can’t easily wash at home and are best handled as little as possible (wool, linen, delicate fabrics).

How to choose a garment bag: a quick checklist

• Format: one fold means fewer creases; two/three folds are more compact and convenient if your suit isn’t “fussy.”

• Size: the length should fully cover your jacket/dress and allow it to hang without bending the hem.

• Material: durable and hard-wearing, preferably water-repellent; stitching and zippers should be solid, with no weak points.

• Interior organization: shirt pockets, a section for a tie/belt, and straps to keep items from shifting.

• Carrying: a comfortable handle/strap and a way to hang it (hook/loop), so you can set clothes up immediately in a hotel.

How to pack a suit so it wrinkles less

1. Button your jacket (not all the buttons — 1–2 are enough) and smooth the shoulders.

2. Fold trousers along the creases, or roll them lengthwise along the seam — whichever you prefer, just avoid twisting.

3. Place thin paper or a fabric layer between folds (especially if there’s metal hardware).

4. Secure everything with the internal straps and don’t overstuff the shirt pockets — fewer bulges means fewer creases.

5. Once you arrive, hang items right away: open the garment bag and let the fabric “rest.”

Why BRIC’S Life is a smart choice for travel

If you want a garment bag that isn’t “disposable,” but will last for years and still look refined, it makes sense to consider brands that specialize in travel accessories. One strong option is BRIC’S from the Life collection (model BLF00332).

• Size 128×63×1 cm — designed for a full-length suit or dress.

• Signature suede-effect material: water-resistant and hard-wearing; finished with vegetable-tanned Tuscan leather.

• Outside: a zip pocket and a top carry handle.

• Inside: four practical shirt pockets, so you can pack a complete outfit in one place.

• Life aesthetic: a recognizable “vintage” character with clean, classic lines — appropriate for business travel and ceremonies alike.

• Prestige: the Life collection by Bric’s is chosen by many well-known travelers and is often associated with British royalty (including the Wales and Middleton families).

Conclusion

A garment bag is a genuinely useful travel accessory: your suit wrinkles less, your clothes stay protected, and you save both time and nerves. If you travel often for work or events, it’s worth choosing a quality cover once — and using it for years.
